Job Description: 

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) employed in a school setting works under the direct supervision of a certified Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) to provide therapeutic and educational services to students with communication disorders. The SLPA assists the SLP in implementing individualized treatment plans and interventions to help students improve their speech, language, and communication skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the SLP to assess students' speech and language abilities using appropriate diagnostic tools and                 techniques.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with                             communication disorders.
  • Provide direct therapy services to students, both individually and in groups, using evidence-based techniques and               strategies.
  • Assist students in improving their articulation, phonological awareness, fluency, voice, and language skills through             targeted exercises and activities.
  • Facilitate communication and social interaction skills, including pragmatic language, for students diagnosed with               autism spectrum disorders or social communication disorders.
  • Support students with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, such as sign language or                       communication boards, to enhance their ability to express themselves.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals involved in the student's care to ensure appropriate carry-       over of therapy goals across academic settings.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of student progress, including therapy sessions, assessments, and any                 changes in treatment plans.
  • Assist in the preparation and selection of therapy materials, resources, and technology tools to enhance the delivery         of services.
  • Follow required ethical and professional guidelines outlined by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association            (ASHA), state licensing boards, and school policies.

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Speech Language Pathology Assistant program or equivalent, or Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
  • State licensure or certification as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant, as required by the state or district.
  • Prior experience working with children or students in a school or clinical setting is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of various speech and language disorders and their associated therapy techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with students, parents, teachers, and other         professionals.
  •  Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks to meet the needs of a diverse caseload.
  •  Basic computer skills and familiarity with various software programs used for documentation and data tracking.
  •  A compassionate and patient demeanor with the ability to motivate and engage students.
  •  Willingness to stay updated on the latest research and best practices in the field of speech-language pathology.
  •  Ability to work independently and follow instructions from the supervising SLP.
